It’s the first cold night of the year. You’re in bed, warm, almost asleep. Then it hits you. The hose is still on the spigot. The pipes in the garage are bare. And the smoke detector in the hallway has been chirping since August.

So now you’re standing in a hardware store aisle at 7 p.m. with everyone else in town who had the same thought.

We’ve been there. That’s why we’re writing this.

Your next three months of home tasks are already on your calendar. Most of them take an hour or less. But a lot of them need something. A filter. A foam sleeve. A pack of batteries. And Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days runs October 6 and 7, which is about the best timing you’ll get to grab it all at once.

The Short List

Here’s what your October through December tasks usually call for. Depending on where you live, a few of these won’t apply. Check your calendar and skip what you don’t need.

October

November

  • Winterize the mower. Fuel stabilizer and small engine oil. Old gas turns to varnish over the winter. Then spring shows up and the mower won’t.
  • Flush the water heater. Mostly a garden hose and patience. While you’re at it, a water leak alarm next to the tank is cheap peace of mind.
  • Stock ice melt. Buy it now. Not the morning after the first storm, when the shelves are empty and the price isn’t.

December

  • Replace air filters. Check the size printed on the side of your current filter, then grab a multi-pack. MERV 8 works for most homes. MERV 11 if you have pets or allergies.
  • Check holiday lights and cords. An outdoor-rated extension cord, light clips instead of staples, and an outdoor timer so you’re not running outside in socks at 11 p.m.

Tip: Buy filters and batteries in multi-packs. You’ll need them again in a few months, and it’s already on your calendar.

Either way, the goal is the same. Get the stuff in the garage before the cold gets in the house.

Your list, your house. Every home is a little different. Open your HomeShape calendar to see exactly what’s coming up for your climate, and skip anything that doesn’t fit.

HomeShape ROI Table

Parts & MaterialsAbout $80 to $150 for the full winter list, depending on what you already have
Time (~$40/hr)One evening of online shopping instead of three trips to the store. Saves about 2 to 3 hours, or $80 to $120.
Inconvenience FactorLow. Includes a Spousal Stress Index reading taken when you come home from the hardware store with ice melt, a wreath, and no furnace filter. Again.
TotalsAround $100 in parts, one evening, zero parking lots
ROI MultipleOne burst pipe can run $10,000 or more. Even one avoided disaster is roughly a 100x return.
HomeShape VerdictShop once, shop early. Let the deals pay for the parts you were buying anyway.

Spousal Stress Index is not peer-reviewed but is considered highly accurate.
