A Home Maintenance Calendar That Remembers

My first home calendar lived on the side of the fridge.

Paper. One magnet. By March it looked like a crime scene. Tasks crossed out. Tasks crossed out and then un-crossed-out. Arrows moving things to “next weekend.” And in the margin of October, in handwriting I no longer recognize: “furnace guy – Dave? – 801 something.”

That calendar did one thing really well. It was mine.

Your HomeShape calendar has always been smart. It knows your climate zone and what your house needs each month. But until recently it was the same calendar for everyone in your zone. It couldn’t remember what you did. It couldn’t hold Dave’s number.

Now it can.

What changed

We added log-in. That one change opened the door to everything below.

No password to forget. Tap Log In, we email you a link, you click it, you’re in. Your calendar link still works for viewing like it always has. Logging in is what lets you change things.

What you can do now

Check it off.
Mark a task done. Your progress card keeps score: percent complete for the year and an estimate of what you’ve saved by staying ahead of problems. It’s surprisingly motivating. Ask anyone who’s ever watched a progress bar.

Customize your calendar.
Hit Customize and your calendar is yours to shape.

  • Add your own tasks. The koi pond. The hot tub. The weird skylight.
  • Edit a task’s name, notes, or day.
  • Move a task to a different month if your house runs on a different clock.
  • Delete tasks that don’t apply. No pool? No pool tasks.
  • Set tasks to repeat. Every month, every quarter, twice a year, once a year, or every few years. Or just once.

Browse the Task Library.
Not sure what you’re missing? Open the library and search every task we track across all nine climate zones. Anything already on your calendar is marked, so you only see what’s new. Pick one, choose a month, done.

Save the details that always go missing.
Open any task and add the make, model, and manufacturer of the thing it’s about. Drop in a link to the manual. Add notes. Next time the water heater acts up, the model number isn’t behind a dusty panel. It’s on your phone.

Home Documents.
Upload the big stuff. Inspection report. Closing papers. Warranty cards. They’re stored as real files on your account, private to you, one click away. No more “I think it’s in the blue folder.”

Your home’s build year.
Add the year your house was built. It’s a small thing that matters more than you’d think. A 1978 house and a 2019 house need different things.

Look ahead. Look back.
Flip forward to next year to plan, or back to see what you got done.

Control your reminders.
Turned off reminder emails at some point? You can turn them back on right from your calendar.

Open the live sample calendar and tap Try Editing. Add tasks, check things off, move stuff around. Nothing saves, so break whatever you want.

Why this matters

A calendar that tells you what to do is helpful.

A calendar that remembers what you did, what you own, and who you called is something else. It’s your house’s memory. And houses, as it turns out, have a lot to remember.

That old fridge calendar got thrown out every January. Everything in the margins went with it. Your HomeShape calendar keeps it. Year after year.

What’s on the workbench

We’re not done. A few things we’re building next:

  • An easier way to put HomeShape on your phone’s home screen
  • Reminders that show up where you’ll actually see them
  • More ways to keep track of what you’ve spent and what you’ve avoided

HomeShape ROI Table

Parts & Materials$0. Free account. An email address you already have.
Time~$7. About 10 minutes to log in and make it yours at ~$40/hr
Inconvenience FactorVery low. Clicking one link in your email.
Spousal Stress IndexDrops sharply the first time your spouse asks “when did we last replace the water heater?” and you answer in under four seconds, with a model number.
Totals~$7. Versus the cost of guessing: a duplicate service call, a missed warranty, a filter bought in the wrong size. Again.
ROI MultipleHard to count. Easy to feel. One saved warranty claim pays for this a hundred times over
HomeShape Verdict: Do it. Ten minutes now. A house that remembers itself from here on out.

Spousal Stress Index is not peer-reviewed but is considered highly accurate.
